Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
